Imane Ayissi Couture Fall/Winter 23-24 Collection "Mguilguidigueu-Mteun"

Mssam/Assou

African clothing and haute couture share the common characteristics of being custom-made, handcrafted, and emphasizing decoration and ornamentation of the textile and garment's surface. Contemporary fashion, however, like contemporary architecture and design, minimizes decoration in favor of structure, architecture, and form. The cut is what is highlighted. Textiles are chosen without patterns, based on their structural quality or texture. This conflict between traditional and modern doesn't resonate with me. I appreciate "decorated" fabrics, which often allow for more compelling storytelling through fashion, as much as the simple form of a garment, when it is perfect, with a magnificent volume.

It is with this opposition in mind that I approached this collection, revisiting classics of Couture with all sorts of decorative effects largely achieved through African know-how: there are woven motifs from the Kente of Ghana or the Ntutuere of the Bamoun region of Cameroon, printed motifs with tie-dye from Cameroon, embroideries made in Senegal according to a traditional know-how used to decorate grand ceremonial clothes or the application of raffia from Madagascar… But also through pure exercises in cutting and the search for volumes or seeking to overcome this opposition with dresses whose decorative effects are no longer applied but become the structure of the garment.

IMANE AYISSI

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1000/0616/6875/collections/IMANE-AYISSI-FW-23-24-look-2-scaled.jpg?v=1773500533
